Neurodivergence is the term used to describe the tendency of a person's brain to analyze and respond to information differently than what is considered typical or average. Neurodiversity refers to the concept of accepting and normalizing brains that function differently, rather than stigmatizing them as abnormalities.
In many learning environments, neurodivergent children are expected to conform to the expectations designed for a neurotypical child, which can be challenging for them. While some educators have specialized training in supporting students with unique abilities and learning needs, others may only have experience working with neurotypical children. Without the proper knowledge, skills, and ability to identify the signs that a student may have diverse learning needs, educators can become frustrated when working with neurodiverse students. This frustration can, in turn, negatively impact the student's learning ability, self-esteem, and self-confidence.
This program aims to equip educators with the necessary insights to effectively work with both neurotypical and neurodivergent students. Throughout the program, various types of neurodivergent conditions are covered including ADHD, autism, dyslexia, learning disabilities, and others. Neurodivergent individuals exhibit fundamental differences in social understanding, sensory perception, and information processing, and the subtle differences in the way their brains operate can impact their thinking, learning, and behavior.
