“My inspiration for WorkReady comes from more than 20 years of helping people navigate the world of work. It also comes from being a mother.
My family and I have had countless conversations about how different the world of work will be for our children and the students we teach. Technology is advancing, artificial intelligence is reshaping industries, and career pathways are evolving faster than many of us could have imagined. If the world our children are preparing to enter is changing, the way we prepare them must change, too.
Growing up, I wanted to be just like my mother. I admired her, and I followed her into the same field without exploring the many other possibilities available to me or discovering where my own strengths and passions truly aligned. I’ve been fortunate to build a successful career, yet it wasn’t until adulthood that I fully recognized what genuinely fueled my passion. I sometimes wonder how valuable that understanding would have been to the little girl who was simply trying to become just like her mom.
I want young people to discover their strengths, explore possibilities they may not even know exist, and understand that their futures do not have to be limited by what they have seen or experienced. College is one valuable pathway, but it is not the only pathway to a meaningful, successful life. Skilled trades, technical education, apprenticeships, and entrepreneurship deserve to be explored with equal dignity. And for our student-athletes, I want them to chase their wildest dreams while knowing that preparing for life beyond athletics does not mean believing any less in their potential. Their dreams deserve both encouragement and a plan.
I also want our children prepared for a future in which artificial intelligence will be part of nearly every industry. They need the ability to think critically, adapt, communicate, solve problems, build relationships, and use emerging technology responsibly, so they can not only work in a changing world but contribute meaningfully to it.
That is why WorkReady was born. Our responsibility to children cannot end at the classroom door. I don’t want students to spend the first 20 years of adulthood discovering possibilities we could have helped them explore when they were 12.
I want them to dream boldly, explore widely, prepare intentionally, and enter the future ready, not just for work, but for life.”
